Another day [Korvin, closed]

"That could have gone really bad, Petra," he says, sounding more paternal than he'd like. "I could have gotten that for you. Or Tens. He could probably have gotten you something special," Korvin says, shaking his head. "And if that dealer knew you were coming... How much do you think the imperials would pay to 'bring you to justice'?"

Korvin sighs, and runs a hand over his face. "But you know all that, because you've had plenty of time to think about it. So let's try this question: What do you think you're gonna do with that?" His face is neutral; it's a genuine question.

[Petra]

"Wow," she says, arms crossed. Glaring at him she can feel the blood start to boil and so she looks away, brows deeply furrowed. Not just annoyance, but a bubbling anger seeping into her tone, "Ya know? I thought maybe you might be someone I could trust not to talk down to me. Treat me like some kid you have to do kriff for, considering you're- I dunno, my age? In almost the same boat as me? Really hoped even after everything back at the hideout. What do I get though? Korvin Hikarrin resident bad-boy from the Upper City turned rebel turned lover-boy turned.." she gestures at him, shrugs, "and now you want to add 'my father' onto the kriffin' list?"

Korvin, whether he expected the outburst or not, sits quietly while she vents. When she's finished, he replies calmly.

"Nope. I'm your friend. Who is your age, and knows less about a lot of things than you do. But I have given a lot of thought to what one of these means," he says, slowly drawing the heavily customized blaster from his hip holster. He sets it crosswise on the grass just in front of his knees.

"I bought this after you were captured, when I thought..." He takes a deep breath. "When I knew that people would need protecting. I got it upgraded, with Tens' help, for the rescue mission. Because I knew there was... a real chance... that wouldn't go well." Korvin keeps his tone level, but he's clearly forcing himself to share this. "When, ah, I tried shooting it at a target dummy, it almost vaporized the head. Not just scarred, or burned, but almost vaporized. That's what these mean. That we're daring a stormtrooper or whoever to blast us before we blast them. And, um, I made my peace with that. For the rescue. That I probably wasn't going to come home from that." He has to stop to take a deep breath.

"So I want to know, what are you going to do with that? Because I already committed that, if someone starts shooting at you, I'm stepping in front of you. You're a lot more important to this rebellion than I am, so," he huffs a rough breath, "Um, that's good. But if you're carrying that, I gotta know... What are you gonna do with it?"

With the last bit she steps forward, a flare, hand raising into the air with one finger up- and then the rest of what he said settles with her. There's a sudden pause to her lurch forward in anger as she calms. Finger lowering, gaze shifting down, and then her hand falling back to her side she sighs, settling back. Petra starts walking forward, not toward Korvin and for a moment he might think she's about to storm off. Walking to another spot where they found the shade, just near enough the conversation was private but just away, and looking away too, enough that she didn't accidentally stifle herself by making eye contact or something like that.

Sighing she falls into her seat, looks up to the sky, and sighs once more for good measure. "Nothing.. I hope," she says, there's a tired sincerity in her voice. A pause that feels less like he should respond and more like he should wait for her to go on. It lasts longer than he might like, but she does continue, "You know how I said how much I hated everyone treating me like some kinda thing they had to lock away to protect? I do- I really do but, that's not the worst thing about it. Really it's the sitting around all day and no matter how many people tell me I'm safe I don't feel safe. I can't feel safe, cause everyone else wants to do things for me, but also just cause- what're they going to do?"

Korvin sighs too, hoping she hears a tone of agreement in it.

"We do all want to keep you safe," he concedes. "We want you to feel safe, and be safe." Without any effort, she'll sense a "but" is coming.

"But I'll tell you, you're right. Even holed up in the hideout and never leaving, we can't be sure you're safe. None of us are really safe -- hell, people who aren't doing anything aren't safe under the empire. Which might make you think, 'Kriff it. Do whatever I want til they catch me.'" Korvin gives a tired head shake, then smiles a little. "You know why we gotta protect you?"

[Petra]

"I seriously wonder if you have any idea who I am," she comments, a groan building in her tone until she uses it to punctuate the sentence. Head resting back against the wall behind her. Pulling one of her legs up in front of herself she leans her forearm onto it, hand hanging limp there. Eyes glancing toward the sky, watching the weather above- it wasn't horrible entertaining, just a clear space of a singular color.

"You know, this whole pausing to ask me that thing you're doing really does not do anything for your likeability, right?" she says, there's not exactly aggression in her tone but a prodding annoyance. Blowing air out up over her face the front few locks of her face move apart just a little.

There's a rasp of laughter from the Pantoran. "Well, then you're gonna hate when I tell you this."

Korvin partially turns, so he can more easily point to a patch of small to medium sized flowering things, which look sort of like if prickly coconuts could grow flowers as hats.

"You see those plants? You, and them, are important for the same reason. Symbols of hope. As long as people keep caring for this park, the old days aren't forgotten. There's hope for the future, after we endure the present." He takes a deep breath.

"You're a symbol of hope. Defiant Petra, who resisted, was captured, but then escaped! That gives people hope. Makes them want to join us because it shows we can win. So there's a lot more to you than just someone who wants to fight. And I get wanting to fight." He points down to his fancy blaster.

"But if fighting starts, the thing is, it's more important that you get away. If you stay in a fight and get killed or captured, it would be devastating. No one cares if I don't make it out, but you have to get away." He'd been speaking very matter of factly, but then asks in a softer voice that few would have heard him use: "Do you think you can do that? Focus on escape, when there's a blaster on your hip?"

[Petra]

"Korvin.." she says, the tone tired she brings her thumb and index up to the bridge of her nose and grips tightly. Groaning, sighing, she shakes her head. "I... I wanted to trust you, cause I thought you'd maybe also understand. That's.. apparently limited to just one or two good people. Cause I don't think you're even really listening to me. I'm not even sure who you think you're talking to," she sighs.

"You just see me as some angry girl or something? Leave it at that? Oh she's Petra, she's always yelling and getting into shouting matches with people. She wants a blaster cause she's gonna go shoot some bad guys!" she puts on a tone as she says this, one that was definitely mocking. Another parody tone, "Hey Korvin, everyone's treating me like a thing they all need to lock away and protect. Hey Petra, you're a symbol, we have to lock you away and protect the heart of the people. Sorry, we forgot you're a living thing, but you just gotta deal," she looks around, finding a clump of dirt she can dig her hand into pulling out some of the loose dirt and looking at it. Fluttering her fingers to let it fall back to the ground.

"I'm not kriffing looking for a fight," she says, her anger flaring into her voice. "I just don't want running and getting caught to be my only two kriffing options. And here you are with this.. no one cares if you make it out nonsense? What're you trying to do? Depress me into shutting up? Cause that's never worked for anybody."

Korvin had again sat quietly through her comments, watching her thoughtfully. When she's done, he's still sitting and considering her: what he really knows, from dealing with her; what he's heard, about her family for example; and what he can guess, considering what Petra and her sister had gone through, and knowing how he'd feel if it'd been him and Kerrsa. He closes his eyes and exhales a long-suffering sigh.

"Yeah. That's about what I figured," he says, tone matter-of-fact as he opens his eyes to look at her again.

"So we're going to get someone to train you on using that, and we'll try to get some tactical training too. Not just you," he clarifies quickly. "We need some people we can count on to protect the others, to really stand tough with stormtroopers. I think my sister Kerrsa will help us, and she really knows this stuff."

Korvin comes to one knee, holsters his blaster, and finishes rising. "Now, what was your plan for hiding that from Mylar and the others?"

[Petra]

"I'll take the training," she says, after a long wait. Pushing herself up to her feet she dusts off her clothes quick. Never even turning back to Korvin she comments, "Good luck convincing any of the others to go along with it. Sera won't need, Mara and Mylar ain't keen," she says, with a deep inhale she lets it free as a sigh.

"I'm done sharin' today," she says, and then proceeds to walk off on her own. Whether he tried to follow or not.. the conversation was more or less over.
